What an interesting poll?! I must say I've always had 'idols' in different fields of the arts, but while I was always very interested in the person behind the artist/public persona it never occured to me, to decide to dislike the art based on the behaviour suggested above. Not that I condone (self)destructive or even criminal behaviour and I am always at odds with deeply religious people but to me, someone's art transcends their mere humanity and becomes public, unburdened by the person's fallacy...
I loved Amy Winehouse as an artist and while I am compassionate about what happened to her I very much doubt I would have gotten on with her. Picasso's Guernica I am in awe of but I'm fairly confident he was an arsehole etc etc.
Sorry for the rant, this struck a nerve somehow :)

I don't actually decide to dislike art based on the artist's behaviour, but some of those definitely color my appreciation of it. And if it's behaviours / opinions that I really can't stand and it shows through their art, then it may damage forever my ability to enjoy their art.

To a point where, now if what I learn of an artist bugs me a little, I will no longer try to know more about them as persons. I will just stick to their music or whatever, but I won't read any more interviews.

Also I think that a lot of the personality of artists comes through in their art anyway, consciously or not, especially singers.

One origin for that poll was me wondering if there was any truth in that general assumption from majors and entertainment industry that if a female audience finds out that their favorite artist is gay, it will stop their career.
I always thought it wasn't the case, because a fantasy is a fantasy is a fantasy... Idols are out of reach anyway, so out of reach because you're not a bimbo and you have zilch opportunity to meet them, or out of reach because they don't like women is the same IMO. And most of the fandom people I know fantasize on slash, so... they don't mind ;)

But I talked with fandom friends who said that they couldn't fantasize any longer about an actor or a singer if they found out he was gay. So I wonder how widespread it is.

You have a point, several in fact, now I've mulled it over.

Disliking an artist does colour one's appreciation ultimately, I find I must admit. Case in my point being Bon Jovi; loved their first 4 albums back in the early 90s but that man strikes me as having an ego out of proportion and it put me off...

With TH and me it combines your 2 next point but in a twisted way, hehe.
I must admit I like exactly ONE of their songs, Monsoon. I tried listening to other stuff but it's not for me at all. I love their public persona's, Bill might be gay or not (not sure, don't care) but I love to see him 'slashed' (him and plenty of others) He's larger than life somehow and in spite of being so young and so much happening to him he comes across as pretty grounded, which I admire.
Anyhow, now your questions make a lot more sense to me, thx :))

You'll probably get more votes if you make the results anonymous.

You think so? I didn't even know there was a setting for it.

I can't seem to find an "edit" option now that's it online though :/

It never even occured to me that you couldn't..... but actually it looks like not, sorry. But I think, yeah, some people might not want to answer all these questions about themselves with their names attached.

Maybe have an option to post their answers anonymously in the comments?

I eventually figured that I could have an option where the detailed results are only viewable by me (the closest from anonymous there is). But I had to re-type the poll from scratch as you can only pick that option at the very beginning of the process.

I added the option to post answers anonymously in comments in that new post, and set the comments as screened. Thanks for the input :)

Is this just a general interest of yours or does this poll have a specific reason?

It's an attempt of getting a broader insight on those questions than I think I know.
And it's for that book I'm writing on fandom.
